A sporty, new 118kW MZR 2.0-litre engine powers the MX5. This light and compact design features chain-driven double overhead camshafts, 4 valves per cylinder, variable intake valve timing and electronically controlled port fuel injection. Sports car enthusiasts will also reap a special pleasure from a new six-speed manual transmission.

Every aspect of the MX5's control operations have been coordinated, with steering, suspension, brakes, engine, and transmission responses that create a truly dynamic sports car. Newly developed rear suspension and an increase in overall chassis stiffness are significant factors in the MX5's enhanced dynamic stability.

The MX5 exterior remains exciting and fun, but incorporates modern styling cues to communicate both the simple functionality of a modern lightweight sports car and the athletic solidity of a true sports car.

The new MX5 design and style, makes it a safer car than its predecessors. The addition of Dynamic Stability Control as a standard feature on both Roadster Coupe and Soft-top models, enhances and improves the MX5 handling, by maintaining stable vehicle attitude during cornering, slippery surfaces or in an emergency maneuver.

MX5 has SRS airbags; both driver and front passenger. And for the first time new Side Air Bag technology is deployed which consists of two sections.
